"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich." (2 Cor 8:9)
Did Jesus come to earth to make us financially rich? Is that the reason why Jesus left his glory in heaven to come to this sinful world? Did he come for the purpose of making believers very rich in monetary terms? No, no and no! This is a very disturbing teaching to relegate the work of redemption to a mere quest for acquisition of gold. Apostles of money had taught from the above scripture that Jesus became poor for us to become rich (in monetary terms). This is an aberration and a slap on the integrity of the word of God. They fail to realise the great difference between earthly riches and the unsearchable riches of Christ. Jesus did not come to make a lot of money for us. He came to save our souls. Jesus came for the work of redemption. Jesus became poor by leaving His glory and riches in heaven to come to this earth. That was how he made Himself poor. Christ's coming down to earth to become a man, walking on our dusty streets was poverty for the son of God. He did all these so that we can also become a partaker of His glory and riches. The kind of wealth Jesus came for us to enter into is the riches of becoming the sons of God and having access to the presence of God. If Jesus came for us to become financially rich, then it means that rich people who are not in Christ do not need to be saved, since they are already 'rich'. Men do not necessarily need Jesus to amass worldly riches. Many atheists who do not even believe in the existence of God are billionaires. If why they need to give their lives to Christ is to become wealthy in monetary terms, then, they do not need to be saved. They are already billionaires! Financial prosperity is not a sign of spirituality. Having a lot of money is not a sign of being saved or being in the will of God. A man is still very poor, even with a lot of money in his account if he has not found peace with God in his heart. Peace with God can only come by salvation through Christ Jesus. The commission of the Church is to make disciples of all nations, not to make billionaires of all nations.
