Why are we on this earth?
Earth is a place of proving. It is like a higher institution where students enrol, do a lot of activities, take lessons and write exams. One day, they graduate and exit the school. Some will pass and some will fail. The summary of everything we do on earth is an opportunity to qualify as true worshippers in eternity.
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23,24)
What we are doing here on earth does not end here. If we look at the small picture, we can say we are here to fulfil purpose, fulfil a destiny, leave a mark on the sand of time etc and we will be right. Those things are good. We need to find our purposes and fulfil our destinies. We can also aspire to do great things to the glory of God or to the praise of men and that will be alright. However, as we zoom our lenses beyond the perimeters of this earth and arrive in heaven, what men are doing on earth takes on a new meaning. The earth-point-of-view is temporal while the heaven-point-of-view is eternal. One supersedes the other.
How we cross the finishing line on earth matters
A child in school may think he is there to solely enjoy himself, engage in various activities, win gold medals in sports, lead his fellow students in agitations against the school authorities or even become the president of the student union. As long as those things are not vices, the parents are ok with them. They can even encourage their child in his efforts and commend him as he makes those landmarks along the way. However, from the parents’ point of view, those are not the important things. They are only interested in one thing, which is the report sheet or the exam records of their child as he progresses and at the point of exit.
The parents are waiting in anticipation of when their child is going to reach the finishing line and show them his certificate. When she is declared: “passed”, they rejoice and know that their child has fulfilled the purpose of which they sent her to the higher institution. Sometimes, the reason why parents send their children to school is different from what those students think is the reason why they are in school. When a student is oblivious of the reason why his parents sent him to school, he thinks he is there to simply enjoy himself.
The only thing that matters to the parents at the point of exit is the academic result. The same way, the only thing that matters to God and the cloud of witnesses at our point of exit is our report sheet, which is prepared in heaven. This will determine if we graduated from earth as true worshippers or not. Every good deed we did while on earth can only count if we are declared: “PASSED”.
